Many new landlords/letting agents are now offering tenants the choice between paying the traditional hefty 5-week deposit, and the newer Zero Deposit option. But what does the new option entail, what are the costs and what does this mean during and post my tenancy?

As you may have seen, from the 1stJune 2019 the tenant fee ban was enforced, but what exactly can, and can’t I be charge for?

What can I be charged for?

  • Late payment of rent
  • Lost keys or fobs
  • Ending your tenancy early
  • Changing or assigning your tenancy
  • Renewing your tenancy

What can’t I be charged for?

  • Referencing
  • Administration
  • Credit or immigration checks

You may still be charged a holding deposit, for utilities or a tenancy deposit however there are now stricter rules in place to protect tenants.

For a more detail on any of the above, or find our how you can complain if you think you have been charged a banned fee; check out Gov.uk using https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/tenant-fees-act
